Wave-turbulence separation at a tidal energy site with empirical orthogonal function analysis

چکیده
Acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) are the standard tool for measuring tidal currents at stream energy sites; they used to estimate several parameters, including turbulent kinetic (TKE). However, estimates of TKE from ADCPs often swamped by wave action. We surmise that this bias can be detected as a data mode: test this, we present an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis two months ADCP measurements site with significant activity. The results were compared linear theory, using buoy. first mode identified EOF agrees well predicted and resulting decomposition set into components appears realistic. This is possible alone, therefore offers novel widely applicable technique simultaneous assessment turbulence waves highly-energetic sites. method also applied retrospectively historical sets. show improved higher modes, but requires independent measurement determine optimum number modes. • Wave action introduces large biases energy. contributions decoupled statistically. Method shown work sufficiently strong waves. Decoupling achieved extra data.

Characterization of turbulence anisotropy, coherence, and intermittency at a prospective tidal energy site: Observational data analysis
As interest in marine renewable energy increases, observations are crucial for understanding the environments that prospective turbines will encounter. Data from an acoustic Doppler velocimeter in Puget Sound, WA are used to perform a detailed characterization of the turbulent flow encountered by a turbine in a tidal strait. Metrics such as turbulence intensity, structure functions, probability...
متن کاملImplications of Tidal Phasing for Power Generation at a Tidal Energy Site
Spatial resource gradients have been observed at a number of proposed tidal energy sites. However, these gradients are typically quantified using the first or second moments (i.e., mean or standard deviation) of time series which obscures information about the co‐temporal amplitude and phase variation. These co‐temporal variations have a number of interesting implications for power production f...
متن کاملCharacteristics of the turbulence in the flow at a tidal stream power site.
This paper analyses a set of velocity time histories which were obtained at a fixed point in the bottom boundary layer of a tidal stream, 5 m from the seabed, and where the mean flow reached 2.5 m s(-1). Considering two complete tidal cycles near spring tide, the streamwise turbulence intensity during non-slack flow was found to be approximately 12-13%, varying slightly between flood and ebb ti...
متن کاملHydro, tidal and wave energy in Australia
The three renewable energy technologies discussed in this paper are based on water, but differ markedly in terms of the size of the available potential resource, the maturity of the associated conversion technologies, the extent to which they have been exploited to date, and the current research effort being devoted to their future development. Hydro-electricity and tidal power are both very ma...
متن کاملImpact of Tidal Level Variations on Wave Energy Absorption at Wave Hub
The energy absorption of the wave energy converters (WEC) characterized by a limited stroke length —like the point absorbers developed at Uppsala University—depends on the sea level variation at the deployment site. In coastal areas characterized by high tidal ranges, the daily energy production of the generators is not optimal. The study presented in this paper quantifies the effects of the ch...
